Abstract:In this paper the characteristics of cambium and the accumulation of secondary xylem cells of fast-growing Populus×euramericana cv. '74 /76' are described using the traditional wood anatomy method during the active phase. The relationship between seasonal cambial activity and secondary xylem development are discussed. Results showed that the cambium presented a seasonal cyclical pattern of activity and dormancy. The accumulation of secondary xylem cells was closely related to the features of cambium, in particular to the layers of cambium. | |||

Abstract:The superhydrophobic spherical-like α-FeOOH films on the wood surface was obtained from ferric sulfate and urea by a hydrothermal reaction process followed by a self-assembly of Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) monolayer. The microstructure, chemical state and composition of the products were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-rad diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Energy disperse X-ray analysis (EDX). The hydrophobic property of the treated samples was described by static water contact angles (CAs) and sliding water contact angles (SA) measurement. The stability under ambient condition and durability for corrosive liquid of the surperhydrophobic samples were also investigated in this paper. An analytical characterization revealed that the spherical-like α-FeOOH films with micro-nano structure uniformly deposited on the wood surface and OTS molecules combined with α-FeOOH films. The water contact angle of the as-prepared samples reached as high as 158 and the sliding angle was about 4 . The prepared superhydrophobic wood surface still maintained the superhydrophobic property when stored under ambient condition for three months or immersed in a sodium hydroxide solution of pH 12 and a hydrochloric acid solution of pH 2 for 2 hours at room temperature. | |||

Abstract:In this paper,Mesoporous-ZnO crystals were prepared in aqueous solutions with Lignin-based surfactant(Lignin-phosphate quaternary ammonium salt,LPAS) by one step. X-ray diffraction(XRD) studies show that fine hexagonal wurtzite ZnO particles can be obtained with diameter of 20-40nm. SEM studies reveal that different concentrations of LPAS can affect the Morphology of ZnO. The ball particles can be obtained by low concentration of LPAS. TEM give the evidence that mosopores are found in ZnO crystals and with the average pore size of 36nm according to the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement. | |||

Abstract:The spatial distribution pattern of coarse woody debris of two typical forest ecosystems was conducted with Taylor's power law, Iwao's distribution function, and seven aggregation indexes in Tianbaoyan National Nature Reserve. The results showed that: 1)the spatial distribution pattern of CWD were aggregated, and the aggregation intensity declined with the scale increased; 2)Compared with natural disturbance, the aggregation intensity of logs and snags were increased by human disturbance; 3)It was tested by Blackith's method, the spatial distribution pattern of CWD tend to be susceptible by the external environment condition in small-scale. The spatial distribution pattern of CWD was formed by long-term interaction between natural environment and external disturbance. To some extent, based on these results, we will directly acquaint ourselves with the forest death patterns in the population development, then reveal how the external disturbance, environmental heterogeneity and individual biological features influence the population dynamics, thus provide theoretical basis for predicting population dynamics. | |||

Abstract:Ecosystem water flux is sensitive to change in vegetation canopy attributes such as cover, depth, foliar density and phenology, which alter rainfall partitioning and determine the portion of rainfall intercepted by the canopy. Increase in canopy cover, depth and foliar density associated with vegetation development could increase water loss to canopy interception, potentially leading to a substantial decrease in water available for ecosystem transpiration and non-ecosystem water use. There is limited understanding on the dynamic linkage between rainfall interception and vegetation development in general, and the massive plantation in the temperate region in China in particular. We characterized the canopy structure of Pinus tabulaeformis and Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata, two dominant species at different stages of canopy development at Huodigou Experimental Watershed 2, the Qinling National Forest Ecosystem Research Station, Shaanxi Province, China. We directly quantified rainfall interception of a mature P. tabulaeformis forest between June 2006 and Oct 2008. Along with historic rainfall interception measurements on this site, we discussed the dynamic coupling between rainfall partitioning, species composition and canopy development and its ecohydrological implications for management of the soil and water conservation forests. | |||

Abstract:In this study, tensile tests parallel to the grain were carried out on LV mode in an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) chamber on microtomed slices of Picea jezoensis Carr. Var. microsperma sample. The digital video files(AVI) and a group of TIFF files were recorded for dynamic experiments performed with ESEM while load-displacement diagrams were described, simultaneously. Displacement and strain fields for different load levels under proportion limit were obtained from Digital Image Correlation Method (DICM) . Abstract:Meteorological measurements combined with sap flow techniques provided a low-cost option to study the rates of water uptake by individual trees response to environmental factors on a continuous basis. Modeled canopy conductance (gc) has often been used to predict transpiration (Ec) with the Penman-Monteith (P-M) model. However, a Jarvis-type model, modified to direct estimate the Ec specifically rather than canopy conductance suggested an alternative method. For comparative purpose we parameterized both P-M and modified Jarvis type model using a series of environmental control functions: vapor pressure deficit, solar radiation and air temperature. Both approaches provided good predictions of canopy transpiration and explained 85% and 89% of the variance respectively. These two modeling methods offer a reasonable estimation of water use in the determination of water balance for land water resources planning, vegetation management and impact assessments of rehabilitation. | |||

Abstract:In alpine region of Loess Plateau, by using Li-6400 portable photosynthesis system, light response of gas exchange parameters in S. argentea and H. rhamnoides seedlings under different soil moisture conditions was analyzed. The results showed that Pn, Tr and WUE of the two shrub species were both increased with an increase of the PAR. With continued increase of the PAR, Pn and WUE of S. argentea and H. rhamnoides seedlings declined but Tr still increased. With the increase of soil water content (SWC), Pn, Tr of both two shrub species increased, while WUE increased first, then declined after arriving at the maximum under mild water stress condition (W2). When SWC was in the same, light compensation point (LCP) of S. argentea was lower than that of H. rhamnoides obviously, light saturation point (LSP) and efficiency of light energy utilization of S. argentea were higher than those of H. rhamnoides, and the apparent quantum yield (α) in the leaves of S. argentea was higher than that of H. rhamnoides. So, compared with H. rhamnoides, photosynthetic capacity of S. argentea was stronger at low PAR. Contrastive analysis indicated that under severe water stress condition (W4) H. rhamnoides was easier to be stressed by high PAR. The capacity utilization ratio of low PAR and WUE in S. argentea was higher than that of H. rhamnoides. Thus, it is concluded that the drought-tolerant productivity of S. argentea seedlings was stronger than that of H. rhamnoides seedlings. | |||

Abstract:Two-year old seedlings of Silver buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea (Pursh) Nutt.) were exposed to NaCl salinity (0, 200, 400 and 600 mM) for 30 days. Leaf water potential (Ψw), chlorophyll contents (Chl a, b, and a+b) and K+ content decreased with an increase in salinity. Relative water content (RWC) declined significantly with 400 and 600 mM NaCl. However, salinity induced an excessive accumulation of Na+ in the leaves of plants. Light responses of photosynthesis showed that net photosynthetic rate (PN) values were continuously raised with the increase of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) at all salinity levels and plants treated with 600 mM salinity suffered from photoinhibition with the lowest PN values. The reduction of PN and stomatal conductance (gs) associated with a sharp increase of intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) in the leaves at 600 mM salt-treated plants showed that non-stomatal limitations might have prevailed over stomatal limitations under severe saline conditions, due to severe cellular dehydration, inhibited synthesis of chlorophyll and ionic imbalance and toxicity. It is concluded that S. argentea possesses high salt tolerance capacity and can be widely cultivated in salt-affected areas. | |||
