1. A Simple Anisotropic Bounding Surface Model for Saturated Soft Clay Considering Degradation under Cyclic Loading

Show/Hide Abstract | Cite this paper︱Full-text: PDF (0 B)
Abstract:In this study, a simple elastoplastic bounding surface plasticity model accounting for the degradation of saturated soft clay under cyclic loading is developed on the base of critical state soil mechanics and the bounding surface plasticity. The associated flow rule is adopted for simplicity. A preferable rotational hardening rule proposed by Dafalias is generalized into the domain of dynamic model after comparing different kinds of rotational hardening rules to describe the development of anisotropy in soft clay. A new interpolation function of plastic modulus associated with the length of the deviatoric plastic shear strain trajectory is introduced into the model to describe cyclic degradation. Compared with the existing cyclic elastoplastic model, the amount of parameters needed in the proposed model are relative fewer. Merely 9 material parameters with robust physical meaning including 5 Modified Cam Clay model constants are required. The applicability of the constitutive to predict the saturated soft clay's response is validated by comparing the model simulation of monotonic and cyclic loading behavior under undrained conditions with experimental results. The proposed model is capable of capturing the essential features of response in saturated clay, including anisotropy and degradation.

Show/Hide Abstract | Cite this paper︱Full-text: PDF (0 B)
Abstract:The experimental description of full-scale two-way concrete slabs with clamped edges under furnace environment is presented in this paper. The details of clamped support conditions, arrangements of reinforcement, positions of displacement transducers and thermocouple trees are described. The experimental results including temperature distribution, central vertical deflection and the edge horizontal deflection of the concrete slabs are given. A segment equilibrium method to calculate the limit load-carrying capacity of concrete slabs in fire conditions is presented. The model considers the tensile membrane action contributing to the vertical component of reinforcement tensile forces after the formation of mechanism of plastic hinge line. Comparison between the developed model and test results shows good correlation.

Abstract:One building that is completed in 2006 in Weizhou Town (Wenchuan county), which is a typical local reinforcement concrete (RC) frame, is studied to review the safety levels of local RC frame building. The adopted assessment levels of earthquake ground motion is according to the earthquake fortification intensity in 2010 Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings (CCSDB). By using nonlinear finite element method, probabilistic seismic demand model (PSDM) for the RC frame structures was built to assess the safety levels of the actual RC frames representative of design and construction practices in in Weizhou Town. The fragility curves for immediate occupancy, significant damage, and collapse prevention damage levels of the RC frame building are analyzed. Then the seismic fragility assessment of the RC frame is demonstrated on RC frames. The result reveals the safety levels of RC frame building in in Weizhou Town before the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake Mw7.9.

Abstract:This paper is dedicated to the buckling behaviors of strengthened perforated plates under edge shear loading, which is a typical load pattern of steel plates in civil engineering, especially in plate and box girders. The square plates considered each has a centric circular hole and is simply supported on four edges in the out-of-plane direction. Three types of strengthening stiffeners named ringed stiffener (RS), flat stiffener (FSA and FSB) and strip stiffener (SSA, SSB and SSC) are mainly discussed. The finite element method (FEM) has been employed to analyse the elastic and elasto-plastic buckling behavior of unstrengthened and strengthened perforated plates. Results show that most of the strengthened perforated plates behave higher buckling strengths than the unstrengthened ones, while the enhancements in elastic buckling stress and elasto-plastic ultimate strength are closely related to stiffener types as well as plate geometric parameters including plate slenderness ratio and hole diameter to plate width ratio. The critical slenderness ratios of shear loaded strengthened perforated plates, which determine the practical buckling pattern (i.e., elastic or elasto-plastic buckling) of the plates, are also studied. Based on the contrastive analyses of strengthening efficiency considering the influence of stiffener consumption, the most efficient cutout-strengthening methods for shear loaded perforated square plates with different slenderness ratios and circular hole diameter to plate width ratios are preliminarily identified.

Abstract:PFI (Private Finance Initiative) projects are often projected and paid by the government, so early approval process of PPP project are more strictly than other project. This paper attempts to analyze the characteristics of the PFI project, and then introduce the real options theory, establish a PFI project investment evaluation model with Geske compound option, and finally verify the feasibility by applying the model to PFI project, providing pre-project decision-making methods for the PFI project.

Abstract:In the present paper, for stay cables installed with designed magneto-rheological fluid (MR) dampers of the Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Highway Bridge, a series of in-situ tests are conducted to investigate control efficacy of the cable free vibrations achieved by the semi-active MR dampers, Passive-off MR dampers and Passive-on MR dampers. Based on experiences and lessons from the systemically theoretical and experimental investigations of the Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Highway Bridge in China, one integrated smart damping control and sensing system for the stay cables vibration in cable-stayed bridges site based on microprocessor with the DSP chip is proposed and is carrying out on the Ningbo Zhaobaoshan Bridge in China.

Abstract:The theoretical and experimental studies on multipath effect were carried on. A set of simulating and monitoring system for GPS multipath signals was established, and the continuously two-day-long GPS monitoring data were obtained by means of placing reflecting objects at different heights and distances from the receiver antenna. The improved particle filtering algorithm is the first time being used in the GPS data post-processing. The results indicates that the improved particle filtering algorithm can effectively eliminate the GPS receiver's system noise, and the correlation of continuously two-day-long multipath signals after denoising has the large scale enhancement compared with before denoising.

Abstract:To improve handling capacity of ports, expansion of land by reclamation along the coast is becoming more prevalent in many ports, such as the Jeddah Islamic Port, Saudi Arabia. There usually exists liquefaction potential of thick and soft clay deposits which needs to be eliminated. Here, the in-situ liquefaction potential is evaluated using CPT.

9. Smart Composite Based on Field Emission and Tunneling Effects and Its Piezoresistive Characteristic Model

Abstract:A smart composite is fabricated from cement-matrix and spiky spherical nickel powders. The electrical resistivity of such composite decreases 69.00% under uniaxial compression. The gage factor of this composite is higher than 895.45 within the elastic regime. This ultrahigh piezoresistivity is attributed to the unique needle-like surface morphology of nickel powers. Comparing to the normal smooth spherical nickel particles, the needle-like features of spiky spherical nickel particles can induce field emission and tunneling effects, which leads to highly sensitive responses to strain. A constitutive model relating the change in electrical resistivity to strain of the composite is built within the elastic regime. This model incorporates the field emission effect and the inter-particle separation change of nickel powders in composite. The model is used to predict the piezoresistive characteristic behavior of the composite. The predicted result is compared with the experimental data obtained on the composite, and good agreement is obtained.

Abstract:This paper describes a new meta-heuristic algorithm, called the harmony search (HS), which was conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. The HS algorithm does not require initial values and uses a random search instead of a gradient search, so derivative information is unnecessary. This study focused on pipe diameter optimization while minimizing design cost, then compared the results of HS with genetic algorithm. The results are very promising and demonstrate the usefulness of harmony search algorithms in solving this kind of optimization problem.
