Abstract: Orthotropic steel bridge decks are widely used for large and medium span bridge, but early-age failure in the traditional asphalt concrete surface has been generally experienced on trafficked routes, which is a complicated yet still not well solved technical problem. So a demand exists to find a durable overlay system to increase the safety of orthotropic steel bridge decks. In this paper, four kind of design index are put forward, according to the main distress of the pavement. Then the mechanical behavior of wearing surface on orthotropic steel bridge deck with rib stiffener, longitudinal clapboard and diaphragm was analyzed by Finite Element Method (FEM), it shows that the higher elastic modulus of the intermediate layer and/or the thicker wearing surface, the less stress in the critical fatigue parts of the surfacing and the more favorable to the whole wearing surface. A new composite wearing surface system was present, with cement-based intermediate layer, shear stud connector, and SMA13 surface. And a number of small-scale tests have been performed to investigate the performance of the new composite overlay bonded to a steel plate, such as the thermal compatibility, rutting test under high temperature, and fatigue durability of the new composite wearing surface system, comparing with the traditional double-layer asphalt concrete surfacing. It turns out that the performance of the new composite system is better than the traditional one.

Abstract:With the on-site measured pavement temperature from some section on Jing-Zhu expressway, the rule of maximum tensile stress, maximum shear stress and the maximum flexure of surface at different slope and different stress field were presented by FEM, under the composite effect of horizontal loading and vertical load. It turns out that the degree of slope affects the stress of surface course more, and the tensile stress appears within the range of 2cm-deep from surface. The high temperature field did not make tensile stress and shear stress of upslope pavement increase, but it made the flexure of surface rise. Then efforts were made in this study to investigate rutting failures on Jing-Zhu expressway in China, a long and steep slope expressway, to determine the cause and the source of the rutting. The features of the rutting on each asphalt pavement layer were analyzed by surveying the rutting depth, excavating transverse profile section, and boring samples in the typical sections of expressways where different degree of rutting damages were observed. It was found that 60% of rutting is generated by asphalt middle course and the remaining 40% comes from the other surfaces, which means that middle course is the most important surface course to resist rutting disease. Finally, according to the results, some suggestion for the design of the upslope pavement structure was put forward. According to it, the mixture of the surface was designed and test road was built. The detected data from the test road turns out the asphalt pavement has a good performance.

Abstract:We apply an important tool to extract the traffic cycle signal from traffic data. An alternative to traditional analysis is a non-linear empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method. This method is adaptive and therefore highly efficient at identifying embedded structures, even those with small amplitudes. Using this analysis, the traffic time series are completely decomposed into five non-stationary temporal modes including a 24-hour cycle signal, a 1-week cycle signal and a trend. It indicates that EMD can be used to analyze and interpret the traffic flow

Abstract:Driver car-following control is a quite common activity in driving. Modeling driver car-following in a cognitive architecture can contribute to driving-related human factors research. Queuing Network-Model Human Processor (QN-MHP) is a computational cognitive architecture developed to represent human information processing as a queuing network on the basis of neuroscience and psychological findings. In this paper, using the QN-MHP cognitive architecture, we propose a driver car-following model to represent the concurrent perceptual, cognitive, and motor activities involved in the task of driver car-following. The simulation results show that this model can perform the control process of car-following well, and the results are consistent with those of driver control.

Abstract:In order to seek a simple method to predict real-time vehicle queue length, the basic assumption of which traffic flow in transition is divided into two fluids was represented. The equivalent queue length model was developed on the basis of the conservation equation. The concrete expressions under the two cases were argued. The methods of calculating or calibrating parameters were given. To validate the models under the two cases, the simulation schemes for the first case and the survey schemes for the second case were designed. By contrasting the equivalent queue lengths from the models with the actual queue lengths from the schemes, the following results are found. First, the equivalent queue lengths are all longer than the actual queue lengths. Second, the equivalent queue lengths are stable and the actual queue lengths are fluctuating. The conclusions indicate that the equivalent queue length model can quantitively and better describe the congestion level of traffic flow, especially, for congested traffic flow. Computational implementation of the new method is tractable and can be done very effectively, making it suitable for real-time queue length estimation.

Abstract:The semi-circular breakwater is a type of structure suitable for soft ground. Its foundation is subjected to not only long-term vertical loads, such as deadweight of the breakwater, but also the cyclic effects of horizontal, vertical and moment load components generated by the waves acting on the breakwater. There is no reasonable calculation method for evaluating foundation bearing capacity of the semi-circular breakwater on natural or reinforced soft foundation under combined loads. A quasi static finite element method for assessing cyclic foundation bearing capacity of the semi-circular breakwater on natural or reinforced soft foundation under combined loads is developed by combining the concept of cyclic shear strength of soft clay with D-P yield criterion. Then the proposed method is numerically implemented in the framework of the large universal finite element software ABAQUS. According to a practical project, the stability of the semi-circular breakwater is analyzed. The results show that foundation bearing capacity decreases obviously when considering cyclic weakening effect of soft foundation and foundation reinforcement has an obvious effect to increase foundation bearing capacity. Failure envelopes of structural bearing capacity under combined loads of horizontal force and vertical force are gained by adopting swipe load mode and load-displacement load mode, respectively. And three dimensional failure envelope surfaces of structural bearing capacity under combined loads of horizontal force, vertical force and moment are obtained by the method of combining load-displacement load mode with Swipe load mode. Furthermore, the effects of amount of filling sand in caisson, base bed width, and the reinforcement depth of foundation on stability of the semi-circular breakwater are analyzed. Compared with adding the base bed width, foundation reinforcement by driving plastic drainage plate is an effective way to improve foundation bearing capacity.

Abstract:Several expert and fuzzy expert systems have been developed for avoiding collision between vessels in the past decades. However, none of them can negotiate with each other as seafarers usually do when they intend to make a safe but more economic overall collision-avoidance plan in the COLREGS-COST-HIGH situations where collision avoidance following the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea(COLREGS) costs too much. Automatic Identification System (AIS) makes data communication between two vessels possible, so negotiation approaches can be used to optimize vessel collision avoidance. In this paper, a negotiation framework is put forward to optimize the collision-avoidance plans in the COLREGS-COST-HIGH situations at open sea. Negotiations between a give-way vessel and a stand-on vessel and between two give-way vessels are considered respectively. With the framework proposed in this paper, two vessels involved in a COLREGS-COST-HIGH situation can negotiate with each other to get a safe but more economic overall collision-avoidance plan than that suggested by the legacy collision-avoidance systems alone.

Abstract:The penetration of the travelers with ATIS services is an important factor that controls the benefits of ATIS. Studies show that, the congestion extent of the urban traffic system will not always decrease through the increasing of the market penetration of ATIS. In this paper, a bi-level programming model is presented to determine the optimal service price and the market penetration of ATIS, in which the lower problem is a stochastic dynamic user optimal model. A chaotic approach is used to solve the bi-level programming model and the numerical results show the application of the bi-level programming model. Numerical experiments show the effects of the penetration of ATIS on the the travellers’ behaviors and the congestion level of the traffic network.

Abstract:The rate of good level highway in the network is the most important evaluation criteria on the pavement maintenance and rehabilitation quality in China. In this paper, we propose two discrete optimization models in different rate of good level highway constraint handling Methods. These optimal decision models are formulated as linear integer programming problems with binary decision variables. The objective function and constraints are based on the pavement performance and prediction model using the Pavement Condition Index (PCI). Numerical experiments are carried out with the data from a highway system in Sichuan Province.
