Abstract:In the nature, electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are important parameters for describing the basic electromagnetic properties of a material. These two parameters determine the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves. Left-handed medium is a material which has simultaneously negative electric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The left hand medium in microwave frequency band has been realized. But with the increasing frequency of electromagnetic waves, it is hard for us to realize left hand material in optical frequency band. Because a per million of electric dipole acts on transition .In this paper, we try to use the three-level atom structure of Λ type to realize the left-handed medium, and analyze the effect on atom density, light intensity to left-handed medium.

Abstract:In this paper, a portable GHz signal source is designed and developed based on advanced RSIC machine (ARM7) processor and lock-in amplifying technique, which includes a signal generator and a signal amplifier. Simulation on microstrip line electrode is performed using high frequency structure simulator (HFSS) software, and both PCB thickness and electrode width are optimized to get an characteristic impedance of 50 Ω. After the integration of the overall system, measurements are carried out to derive the performances of the signal source. Experimental results indicate that, as the frequency increases from 0.2 to 1.5 GHz, the peak-to-peak amplitude range of the unamplified signal is 16.3~333 mV, that of the amplified signal is 0.152~4.02 V, and the gain of the developed amplifier is 17.7~22.8 dB; the output power decreases from -17.41 to -4.788 dBm, and the cutoff frequency is estimated to be about 4.6 GHz under the noise level of -55 dBm. The signal source can be utilized to supply GHz driving signals for electro-optic switches instead of the commercially avilable expensive ones due to its compact size and acceptable performances.

Abstract:A high-energy THz-wave output has been experimentally demonstrated with terahertz-wave parametric oscillator based on surface-emitted configuration. Through optimizing the cavity length and pump beam size, the maximum THz-wave output energy of 854nJ/pulse was obtained at 1.62THz with the conversion efficiency of 5.7×10-5, corresponding to the photon conversion efficiency of 0.99%. The THz beam profile is measured with THz imager, and it has a Gaussian profile. The measured beam diameter sizes were 423μm and 258μm in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The wide tunable range from 0.75 to 2.81 THz was realized.

Abstract:A miniature fiber-optic temperature sensor which can measure high temperature in a small volume is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor head is fabricated by splicing a small segment of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) to the single mode fiber (SMF), forming a fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FFPI). A high-speed signal processing method is adopted to measure the temperature by detecting the intensity of the reflected light. A high temperature of up to 500 C can be measured by using the propose technique.

Abstract:Directional emission of light is guided by employing the lima?on-shaped cavity laser structure. In order to overcome the low output power character of micro-cavity lasers, a large size device structure is used in this paper. The micro-cavity lasers were demonstrated by using quantum cascade laser material. The micro-cavity laser with large size of 120um produced a light output peak power of 12mW with a directional emission at far-field divergence angle of about 31 for the parallel direction and 68 for the perpendicular direction at full width of half maximum. The micro-cavity laser array was also fabricated, and a light output peak power of about 20mW was obtained.

Abstract:A photonic approach for generation of triangular-shaped pulses based on optical carrier Brillouin processing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed approach, A Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) biased at the minimum-transmission-point (MITP) is used to generate an optical modulated signal with only the odd-order sidebands. And then the amplification gain provided by stimulated Brillouin scatter (SBS) is adopted to recover the suppressed carrier. Meanwhile, the negative-order sidebands of the optical modulated signal are removed by an optical bandpass filter (OBPF). By appropriately setting the modulation index, the amplitude of the 1st-order harmonic can equal to 9 times of that of the 3rd-order harmonic. In this way, triangular-shaped pulses can be obtained. In the experiment, a triangular-shaped pulse with a tunable repetition rate of 8 GHz is generated.

Abstract: A new type of tunable dual-wavelength ?lter based on cascaded acousto-optic gratings (AOGs) in diam-etched ?ber was studied both theoretically and numerically. The side lobe suppression effect of diam-etched AOGs on the transmission spectra is studied. The results show that the dual-wavelength ?lter works symmetrically and efficiently with tunable frequency spacing by adjusting the ?ber length, the frequency of the acoustic signal and the number of segments of the ?bers, respectively. Our studies provide a simple way to realize the dynamic manipulation of dual-wavelength ?lter while keeping the side lobes in the ?lter spectrum is suppressed efficiently.

Abstract:We discussed numerical studies of nonlinear transmission characteristic of Bragg fiber gratings(FBG). Nonlinear coupled-mode equations are numerically solved through Runge-Kutta method. The choice of parameters with Gauss-apodized was analyzed in the spectrum shape. It also contributes to obtain a switching of low power consumption. We discussed the number of point defect and width of it to find a most suitable situation to meet the demands. This approach lowers the pump threshold power. It shows potential applications among all-optical switching.

Abstract:In this paper, the limitations of optimizing the FOPA gain by inserting an OBPF is systemly investigated. A pump depleted model has been developed and the application of OBPF in the dual-pump FOPA is researched by numerial simulation. Results shows that optimizing the FOPA gain by inserting an OBPF is only effective for single pump FOPA and it has many limitations when used in the dual-pump FOPA.

Abstract:We report the first demonstration of wrinkled membranes as a kind of optical focusing devices, which are low cost, light weight and flexible. Our device consists of concentric wrinkle rings on a gold-PDMS bilayer membrane, which converts collimated illuminations to diffraction-free focused beams. Beam diameters of 300-400 μm have been observed in the visible range. By comparing the theoretically calculated and experimentally measured focal spot profiles, we predict a focal spot size as small as around 50 μm if fabrication eccentricity can be eliminated.
