Abstract:A detailed simulation of high power 670nm GaInP/AlGaInP oxide striped laser diode was presented based on the combination of GaInP quantum well width with waveguide thickness. The simulation parameter of background loss was 1500/cm calibrated with the experimental results. As the well width was changed, the well composition should be changed to maintain the fixed wavelength in these devices. In the simulating results of the LDs with 100um current injection region and 900um cavity length, the threshold currents were found firstly decreasing and then increasing with decreasing of quantum well width and waveguide thickness, and a minimum threshold current of 200mA was achieved at a 5nm width GaInP well. While the waveguide had less affection on the threshold current in the thickness ranging from 50nm to 110nm.

Abstract:The effective normalized frequency, the power fraction in the core and the group velocity dispersion of tapered microstructure optical fibers(TMOFs) are investigated by the full-vector effective index method for different values of index α. The index α determinates the shape of TMOFs. It is found that the shape and structure of TMOFs have an important influence on the effective normalized frequency, and the group velocity dispersion. When d/A=0.48, A0=7.2 and A1=2.4 multi-single mode conversion is achieved in TMOFs for the wavelength of 1550 nm.

Abstract:Laser shock forming (LSF) is a high strain rate plastic forming technology, which applies high-amplitude shock wave pressure induced by pulsed laser irradiation to form microparts or to adjust finished shapes. It has been extensively used for the forming of aluminum, copper and other ductile sheet metals. For metallic glasses, laser shock forming is more difficult to be implemented because amorphous alloys exhibit little macroscopic plasticity at room temperature especially under uniaxial compressive, high strain rate, or tensile conditions. In this paper, Fe78Si9B13 metallic glass films with a thickness of 0.03 mm are used for laser shock forming. Structural changes of the glass film before and after laser shock forming are studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the X-ray diffraction curves show that no crystallization is observed when the films were subjected to laser shock forming. Besides, the bending angles caused by laser shocks are investigated under the microscope, which show that the bending angle increases with the increase of the number of laser shocks and with the increase of the overlapping rate of laser spots, but the rate of increase decreases gradually. Moreover, large plastic bending deformation of Fe78Si9B13 metallic glass films has been achieved by laser shock.

Abstract:In terms of the coupled mode theory, microring resonance theory and electro-optic modulation theory, a reasonable project is proposed for designing a electro-optic polymer microring resonator switch array. This device consists of 1 horizontal channel, N vertical channels and N microrings. By applying different manners of the operation voltage on the microrings, the switching functions can be realized in the channels. Furthermore, a method is presented for analyzing the time-domain response of the device. Taking channels as an example, the optimization and the simulation are performed under the resonant wavelength of 1550 nm. When the microring radius is 13.73 , the 3-dB bandwidth of the output spectrum is about 0.05 nm, the switching voltage is about 12.3 V, the insertion loss is about 0.66~1.24 dB, the crosstalk is less than -20 dB, and the switching time is about 11.38 ps. The simulated results show that all the channels of the designed device exhibit favorable switching functions.

Abstract:A proposal for broadband wavelength conversion using four-wave mixing is presented based on a slot waveguide with silicon nanocrystals (Si-nc's) as the optical nonlinear material. The dispersion of the waveguide is engineered to realize a flat dispersion as well as a small effective mode area for better nonlinear interaction by optimizing the waveguide dimensions. The conversion performance is synthetically analyzed and numerical results show that a bandwidth of over 400 nm and an efficiency of -2.38 dB can be achieved using a pump power of 150 mW in a 4-mm-long Si-nc slot waveguide.

Abstract:In this paper, A modified model for wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a silicon micro-ring resonator is presented. The nonlinear phase shifts caused by self-phase modulation and cross-phase modulation are also taken into account in the present theoretical analysis besides the linear propagation loss, the nonlinear losses caused by two-photon absorption and free-carrier absorption. Analysis shows that the nonlinear phase shifts will cause different red shifts for the pump and signal (or converted) resonant wavelengths, and consequently an additional wavelength difference between the signal transmission dip and the efficiency peak, which will increase/decrease the conversion efficiency of the signal channel far from/near the pump. The conversion efficiency and the conversion peak width of each signal channel are both affected by the micro-ring radius and coupling coefficient. A broader conversion peak width can be obtained by using a micro-ring resonator with a smaller Q factor.

Abstract:The noises from dual pump sources induced by gain and loss in photonic crystal fibers are analyzed. A special photonic crystal fiber is designed, and its related noise figure changes with structure parameter. The noise figure decreases as the hole diameter decreases. Three factors including input-signal power, signal wavelength which impact on the final noise figure are presented when the PCF structure parameter is fixed.

Abstract:A fiber optic bending sensing system that uses twin-core fiber as the sensing element has been proposed and demonstrated. The twin-core fiber act as a two-beam interferometer in which phase differences is a function of the curvature, and it can be demodulated by the shift of the unique identification spectrum. By way of FFT analysis of the white light interferometric spectrum, the variation of bending can be measured. The relationship between the bending curvature and the shift of the unique identification spectrum has been given and the experimental results were also confirmed this.

Abstract:A simple coupling approach between a one-core and a two-core single mode fiber has been proposed and demonstrated. By way of splicing and tapering at the fusion point of one-core single mode fiber and the two-core single mode fiber, an effective coupling technique is implemented. The coupling processing is simulated by the beam propagation method. The effects of the two cores of the two-core fiber non-symmetry and the refractive index of each core slightly deferent are also investigated. The theoretical prediction is confirmed by the experimental results and the difference between simulation and experimental results is also discussed.

Abstract:According to the concept of phase matching bandwidth the band width of broadband source by using retracing behavior of collinear quasi-phase-matching (CQPM) optical parametric generator (OPG) in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) is presented firstly. Comparing the various pump wavelengths we obtain the pumping condition and parameters of PPLN to realize the broadband source near 1550nm in the CQPM-OPG. In theory we present the optimum pump wavelength and the maximum ideal bandwidth range to be 940.75nm and 1475nm~1681nm respectively. The study of this issue would provide theoretical basis to realize the broadband source in the future.
