Abstract:A novel frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and double sideband with suppressed carrier (DSB-SC) modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A polarization modulator (PolM) in combination with an optical polarizer realizes DSB-SC modulation generating a frequency-doubling signal, and the SBS effect provides a gain to amplify optical carrier which ensure a fundamental frequency signal be recovered to keep oscillating in the OEO. In the experiment, the frequency-doubled 6, 9.976 and 20.062 GHz microwave signal are generated.

Abstract:In this paper the modulation principle of typical 4-dimensional signals is demonstrated. Performance of dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying signal and polarization-switched QPSK are proved. A novel modulation sheme of DP/PS-RZ-QPSK is proposed in this paper. The scheme presents similar performance as traditional structure while reducing transmitter cost by less use of Mach-Zehnder modulator. The simulate result indicates PS-RZ-QPSK can achive a better transmission performance than DP-RZ-QPSK at the same bit rate (84 Gb/s) and baud rate (28 GBd), and proves showing the feasibility of novel modulaiton scheme.

Abstract:Polarization-shift keying (PolSK), which is performed based on two orthogonal polarization states, has been investigated in detail by experiment and numerical simulation for data rate of 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s. Using a general Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator, a new type of PolSK transmitter has been presented and demonstrated for the first time by polarization coupling technology. And then the PolSK transmission has been experimentally demonstrated in a 50-km single mode fiber system, whose eye diagrams show that the PolSK transmitter works well at 10 Gb/s and the power fluctuation is 8%. Further simulation reveals that the PolSK has great potential in long distance transmission with data rate of 40 Gb/s, while its error-free distance goes beyond 2100 km.

Abstract:By using a feedback-stabilized fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with a PZT-based phase shifter, a novel method for measurement of laser coherence length is demonstrated based on pulses interference. Experimental results show that the coherence length is closed to that measured by the commercial optical spectrometer, and the partial coherence phenomenon is observed. Our scheme can measure not only the high-coherence laser but also low-coherence pulses, which will be widely used in coherent laser measurement and application.

Abstract:In long-reach RSOA based WDM-PON, the upstream transmission is impacted by the unavoidable Rayleigh backscattering because the downstram and upstream links share the same wavelength. To fix the impairment, a viable option is to separate the signal frequency spectrums of downstream and upstream. In this paper, a scheme of 100-km WDM-PON with 10Gbit/s high power efficient coded downstream signals and 2.5Gbit/s NRZ upstream signal is proposed and simulated. The performances of downstream and upstream are compared respectively when NRZ, RZ, IRZ or PPM code is used in downstream. And the relationship between the receive sensitivity of downstream/upstream and the extinction ratio of downstream signal is discussed definitively.

Abstract:To improve the performance of the polarization controller (PC) for the future optical communication and signal processing. A new type of fiber PC (FPC) based on a rotatable fiber squeezer has been presented, and investigated by the method of the generalized principal state of polarization (PSP). Experimental results show that the PSP caused by fiber squeezing is in the equator plane, which rotates around $S_3$ axis on the Poincaré sphere when turning the fiber squeezer. Based on this FPC, a novel method of polarization control is further proposed to realize the polarization conversion between arbitray polarization states. This type of FPC, which has high compact structure and can be directly embedded into any fiber devices, will be an ideal PC for high-speed optical communication and all-optical signal processing.

Abstract:With the advances in optical technology, the span of the Passive Optical Network (PON) has been increased from the standard 20km to 100km. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) has been recognized as the key technology in the next generation flexible and scalable passive optical network. WDM/time-division multiplexing (TDM)-PON is one of the candidates, which combine the WDM and TDM technology. In this paper, we propose an efficient DWPBA for Long-Reach hybrid WDM/TDM-PON by separating the Data and REPORT messages under multi-thread scheduling. We compare our proposed algorithm with the traditional algorithm, and show its advantages on packet delay. The results demonstrate that the DWPBA algorithm achieves high channel utilization and low packet delay when fiber length increased to 100 km.

Abstract:As the dynamic mapping is critical in IP-over-WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) network to ensure the restorability of IP layer, supplying survivability in network is of vital importance for dynamic traffic. However, the survivable mapping problem is complicated and difficulty in dynamic traffic scenario. Several factors can influence the performance of schemes for survivable mapping: The connectivity of topology; Amount of nodes in topology; Computing complexity and scalability of mapping algorithm. In this paper, we study the impact of light-path routing regarding network survivability and preserved capability. In IP-over-WDM network, light-paths are routed on physical topology so that a single fiber cut can cause multiple logical link failures. We propose a real-time survivable mapping algorithm in dynamic traffic scenario. Moreover, a new independent path sets calculation method is presented in order to support the proposed algorithm. At last, simulations are carried out to evaluate the efficiency and scalability of the proposed algorithm in terms of the resource utilization and blocking probability for single link failure. The results of simulations show that the proposed algorithm offers significant improvement of survivability for IP topology.

Abstract:We present an analysis of input pulse parameters in the quantum key distribution system, including influences of pulse width, pulse energy and frequency entanglement. Simulation results show that the quantum bit error rate can decrease with a narrow, smaller energy and smaller frequency entanglement pulse. In addition, the impact of fiber dispersion is also discussed.
