Abstract:A creative suit of hardware scheme that generates physical self-similar traffic is proposed for the first time. A novel optical Ethernet network analyzer is developed by using this scheme. The analyzer transmits self-similar traffic for networks with different Hurst parameter. The packet loss probability, delay and jitter performance can be measured by the analyzer. With two well-known and effective techniques to determine the presence and degree of self-similarity - Aggregated Variance method and R/S method, the statistical analysis of realistic streams generated by the analyzer is presented to verify the usability and reliability of the designed network analyzer

Abstract:A service-driven mechanism in IP over WDM is proposed. It adapt to the burst and randomicity characteristics of IP services. To meet different requirements, QoS of different levels and working modes is provided for users, with which network resources can be utilized more sufficiently .We established a principle experiment to demonstrate this mechanism. Due to the burst and random characteristics of IP services, the traffic flow over the allocated bandwidth is lost under the static resource configuration while the problem does not occur under the service-driven mechanism because new light path is applied and acquired to transport the extra services when the traffic flow exceeds the traffic threshold. We’ve tested packet loss rate of IP services running under the static resource configuration mode and the service-driven mode. From the result, we can see that the throughput of networks can be greatly improved with low packet loss rate by adopting service-driven mechanism

Abstract:As Internet traffic has been explosively grown in Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), traditional SONET/SDH networks needed to be reengineered to handle data traffic in a more efficient way. Recently, several new technologies have been proposed as a solution for that problem, such as next-generation SONET/SDH, RPR and OBS. However, which is the best choice? In this paper, we compare the performance of these technologies, such as the number of required wavelengths, bandwidth utilization, distribution of delay variation and packet loss rate, network throughput and so on, in a two-fiber ring network model which is the most familiar network architecture in MAN. The simulation results show that taking one with another, OBS is the best solution for the future MAN, though its packet loss rate is a little higher than the other two technologies.

Abstract:A novel 2×2 wavelength selective cross-connect (WSXC) module composed of a Bragg-grating-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), a pair of optical waveguide, a pair of 1×2 optical switches (OSWs) and a pair of Y-model combiners is proposed. Multi-channel multi-wavelength selective cross-connect can be realized with the proposed 2×2 wavelength selective crossbar, together with multi-stage interconnection networks (MIN). A 2×2 four-wavelength WSXC is demonstrated by simulation to show its flexibility.

Abstract:In this paper, the influence of offset-time on Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) bandwidth is investigated experimentally on the priority Just-Enough-Time (JET) Optical Burst Switching (OBS) testbed. Considering the effect of delay penalty and burst priority introduced by offset-time, experimental results show that there is optimized offset time for maximizing available TCP throughput.
