Abstract:The Brazier effect in thin-walled angle beam subjected to pure bending is investigated. The derivation using energy method is presented to predict the maximum bending moment and section deformation. Both numerical analysis and experimental results were used to show the validity of the proposed method. Numerical results show that the boundary condition can influence the results due to the end effect, when the length of angle beam goes up to 30 times as the length of beam side, the influence tend to be negligible and the results show great agreements with proposed method with about 5%-15% error. It was observed during the experiment that the collapse of structure is governed by either of Brazier flattening, ridge-line buckling or load-point crippling. When the collapse is governed by Brazier flattening, experiment results are generally 20 percent higher compared with theoretical analysis results, which is a reasonable accuracy in consideration of end effect. . | |||
