Abstract:Axial compression tests were conducted to investigate the compressive behaviour of cold-formed steel stub columns with relatively thick walls. Totally 10 square hollow section (SHS) specimens with wall thickness varied from 6mm to 10mm and nominal tubular length of 600mm were tested. Four inner-stiffener arrangements were considered to study the effects of the stiffeners on the behavior of the tubular specimens. A series of tensile coupons were cut from the cold-formed SHSs at different characteristic areas to obtain a full picture of the enhanced material properties due to the cold-forming process. The achieved sectional stresses from the SHS column experiments were compared with the predicted stresses using methods specified in relevant design codes, AISI and Chinese GB codes in particular, taking into account the enhanced material strength of the cold-formed steel. It is found out that the AISI method is slightly conservative in predicting the sectional stress of the specimens, whereas the GB method slightly overestimates the stress capacity. In general, both methods produce an acceptable prediction of the actual sectional stress, and they both tend to result in a better prediction for specimens with inner stiffeners. | |||
