Abstract:In order to study the effect of guide vane on the vortex-induced vibration characteristics of blunt steel box girder section, this paper first compares the vortex-induced vibration response of the original blunt steel box girder section and the blunt box girder with three different sizes and forms of guide vanes by wind tunnel test. Secondly, the vortex-induced vibration responses of blunt box girders with three different forms and sizes of guide vanes are compared by numerical simulation. Finally, through the comparative analysis of the flow field of the original blunt body section and the inverted L-shaped guide vane with different sizes, the reason for the vortex vibration phenomenon of the blunt body section is found. The results show that the horizontal guide plate has good vibration suppression effect on vertical bending vortex vibration, but it will increase the vibration amplitude of torsional vortex vibration. The inverted L-shaped guide vane has a very obvious suppression effect on the torsional vortex vibration and vertical bending vortex vibration of the blunt body section. By comparing the flow field, it is found that the vortex at the top of the section is eliminated, and the large-scale vortex at the tail is decomposed into smaller-scale vortex, so as to achieve the purpose of suppressing vortex vibration.

Abstract:Taking a 62m concrete-filled steel tube bridge with curved string truss as the research object, according to its reinforcement scheme, the spatial finite element models of the bridge before and after reinforcement were established by using the general finite element software ANSYS. The natural frequencies of the bridge before and after reinforcement were calculated, and the seismic performance of the bridge was analyzed by using the response spectrum method. The results show that the frequencies of the reinforced bridges increase in varying degrees, especially the vertical and torsional frequencies. Before and after reinforcement, the maximum axial force in the upper chord of the bridge is the largest, and the shear force and bending moment are small. The maximum internal force basically appears at the two ends of the upper chord. This position should be regarded as the weak link of the bridge seismic resistance. Under the same cases, the axial force of the bridge after reinforcement is reduced by about 30% compared with that before reinforcement, and the displacement of the bridge after reinforcement is reduced in varying degrees. The reinforcement measures can improve the lateral and vertical stiffness of the bridge, especially the stiffness of the deck system.

Abstract:High temperature and anti-ageing properties of asphalt could be improved by the addition of diatomite as researched in previous papers. It is believed to be alternative superior mineral filler in the construction of asphalt pavement in comparison with ordinary limestone powder. In this paper, compression strength and anti-deformation properties of asphalt sands with different content of diatomite were investigated by uniaxial compression failure test and uniaxial compression creep test. Five groups of asphalt sands with different volume content (0:1, 0.25:0.75, 0.5:0.5, 0.75:0.25 and 1:0) of diatomite to limestone were selected. The compression strength and secant modulus were firstly increased with the increasing of diatomite's content and then decreased when it exceed 0.75 whilst the creep strain was firstly decreased and then increased with the increasing of that. The compression strength and anti-deformation properties of asphalt sands were improved by the replacement of diatomite.

Abstract:Researches on pedestrian-bridge interaction are not enough. In this paper, the pedestrian-induced lateral forces on a bridge are modelled as a sum of an equivalent static force exerted by pedestrians on rigid surface and a self-excited force due to an interaction between the pedestrian and the vibrating bridge. The dynamic balance equation is first established for the pedestrian-bridge interaction system. And then a new explicit integration method is applied to solve the equation with an iteration algorithm, computation procedures based on MATLAB are introduced simultaneously. In the case study at last, it is demonstrated that the new explicit integration method is absolutely reliable and there is nearly no difference between interaction and no interaction simulation in low crowd density, but big difference in high crowd denstiy.

Abstract:For the purpose of obtaining the characteristic parameters of the asphalt mixture aggregate particles, the collected aggregate images were processed and a feasible method of characteristic parameters acquisition was put forward. The automatic detection system was developed based on VC++. A series of processing are done on the collected aggregate images, including image edge detection, image segmentation, morphological processing, region-labeling, contouring and so on. The region-labeling algorithm is improved as well. Database technology is used to deal with the storage, query of the results and several other operations. The whole system is characterized with perfect function, user-friendly interface and stable performance, which provides a practical and accurate method for the characteristic detection of asphalt mixture aggregate particles.

Abstract:This paper aims to find a fast testing method for the asphalt mixture by using the digital image processing method. For the composition of the asphalt mixture contains the asphalt content and the mineral aggregate gradation, the color comparing method is provided to test the asphalt content and the particle analysis method is provided to analyse the mineral aggregate gradation. The normalized histogram of the asphalt mortar part in the asphalt mixture image is compared with that of the asphalt mortar image with known filler bitumen ratio in the colour comparing method to decide the filler bitumen ratio of the asphalt mixture tested. During the mineral aggregate gradation test by using the image processing, the stand image with known gradation is analysed and the average passing rate of each sieve is calculated by using the particle analysis parameters. Then, the correction parameter of each sieve is obtained. In the following test of core sample drilled form the asphalt pavement constructed with the same batch asphalt mixture, the same methods are used consequently to obtain the passing rate of each sieve. The passing rate obtained by the image processing and the correction parameter of each sieve are combined correspondingly to get the final passing rate. The analysis of the asphalt content result show that the asphalt content can be decided accurately if the asphalt mortar image database is rich enough. And the passing rate error of each sieve obtained by using the image processing method is smaller the 2%, which is acceptable. The image-based test of the asphalt mixture composition is worthy practicing in the pavement engineering.

Abstract:The application of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement structures has complemented the flexible pavement structures. The field test results from a test track built in Chongqing, China proved that, other than material selection, structural arrange can influence the shear rutting level. This paper introduces a simple multiaxial yield equation for asphalt pavement materials. It is closely associated with Mohr-Coulomb theory. It also considers both the strength difference between tensile and compressive loading and the difference between σ2 and σ3 in the actual stress field of pavement structures. An asphalt pavement permanent deformation estimation approach has also been introduced based on the proposed yield criterion. The proposed methods have been verified through the successful application in explaining the field test results of Chongqing test track.

Abstract:Updating the structural model of complex structures is time consuming due to the large size of the finite element model (FEM). Using conventional methods for these cases is computationally expensive or even impossible. A two-level method, which combined the Kriging predictor and the component mode synthesis (CMS) technique, was proposed to ensure the successful implementing of FEM updating of large-scale structures. In the first level, the CMS was applied to build a reasonable condensedFEM of complex structures. In the second level, theKriging predictor that was deemed as a surrogate FEM in structural dynamicswas generated based on the condensed FEM. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated by updating the FEM of a real arch bridge with the measured modal parameters.

Abstract: Natural frequencies are of great value to bridge structural design, health monitoring and detection. Related research data show that the ambient temperature can affect the natural frequencies of the continuous box-girder bridges. In order to research the effect of temperature on the bridge structure and conclude the influence law, theoretical analysis of temperature effect on the natural frequencies of the continuous box girder bridges is conducted based on the stochastic subspace identification. First, the finite element model of the bridge is built to conduct thermal-structural coupling analysis. Then regard the analysis results as the original state, and exert white noise excitation on the structure to obtain the dynamic response of the structure. And then analyze the dynamic response based on the stochastic subspace identification and calculate the natural frequencies of the bridges under the temperature effect. At last, based on the practical project of one 3-span continuous box-girder bridge, the validity and the reliability of this method is verified.

Abstract:This paper presents the development of a practical mortar fatigue model on the basis of the dissipated energy concept. A specially designed test setup was developed for characterization of mortar fatigue at meso-scale by means of Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR). Test results showed that mortar fatigue models based on the dissipated energy concept can be developed for the purpose of life predictions under complex loading conditions. The dissipated energy per cycle in the initial phase of fatigue tests is a much more practical indicator for fatigue life determination purposes than the total energy dissipated during a fatigue test. Since a mortar fatigue model based on the initial dissipated energy per cycle was adopted, effects of complex stress and strain signals can be taken into account.
