Abstract:Access between vehicle entrances and urban roads is one of the most important factors considered to ensure the safety and efficiency of the road operation. The entrance is usually located away from intersections to reduce the interference on urban roads. However, in practice, there are still some entrances that are set close the intersection. Therefore, this study conducted the traffic operational analysis of a controlled entrance accessing the urban road with a signalized intersection. A field investigation of the eastern entrance of Zhengzhou University was conducted. Video cameras were used to obtain traffic operation data. Poisson probability distribution was then utilized to describe the vehicles\' arriving process at the entrance using the Chi-square test. M/M/1 queuing model was utilized to analyze the queue length and waiting time of vehicles before the entrance barrier. Impacts of factors including the traffic light timing and phasing, barrier serving time, the distance between the entrance and the intersection on the traffic operation were analyzed.

Abstract:In intersection signal timing, pedestrian phase is quite often treated as a "slave" of the vehicle phase, resulting in unnecessary delays and safety problems. It is highly required to accommodate pedestrians in the signal system, and the development of automated pedestrian detection makes it be applicable. A rule-based dynamic pedestrian control (DPC) strategy accommodating pedestrian in intersection signal system has been proposed in the study. Phase structure including 8 vehicle phases and 4 pedestrian phases for a four-leg intersection has been introduced, and a set of rules regulating phase combination, phase sequence, and phase transition (internal and external) has been established. Dynamic pedestrian clearance interval has also been proposed. Different from previous control strategies, pedestrian demand is a decisive factor for signal timing optimization with consideration of pedestrian safety and comfort. According to simulation results, DPC is beneficial to reduce traffic delay at intersections crossed by a major street and a minor street.

Abstract:In a transportation system, OD pairs are usually accumulated by large quantities of primary records. The records may come from train tickets, freight invoices, and flight trip tickets etc. In 2013, 2.075 billion passengers are transported by China railway. Each train ticket contains information of origin and destination stations, train number, and train class etc. Only several fields of information, such as origin and destination, are required according to specific research purposes. The rest of the fields are unnecessary and need to be merged. A direct merging method in which each record compares with all existing OD pairs will consume a lot of time when there are large quantities of records. This work will propose a sorting-based merging method, which applies to general OD matrices. The time complexity is scale of O(NlogN) . For tests, 30 samples are used for numerical analyses. The results show that the efficiency is far better than that of the direct merging method.

Abstract:This work describes a data merging method under the background of railway tickets data integration. Origin-destination (OD) pairs are fundamental data in transportation engineering, and are widely used in various applications. For example, predictive OD pairs of the long-term future are the basis of optimizing transportation network design. Optimization of transportation plans also relies on existing OD pairs. The size of an OD matrix is always huge in a real transportation system. Each element of the matrix, i.e. an OD pair, is accumulated by numerous passenger tickets or freight invoices.
