Abstract:This paper attmepts to re-examine English teaching through a humanistic perspective by answering the questions of "what has hindered our efforts of effectively helping our students?" and "What can be done to reach all the students and help them learn?" Based upon the constructive view, the paper looks at the respective roles of the learner and the teacher in lanugage teaching and proposes the idea of humanizing English teaching, which is by understanding learners' individual styles, to teach with style, and above all, to observe and make learning happen without neglecting or sacrificing anyone in the classroom. It is an idea of helping to create an encouraging learning environment, to use any necessary activity or technology to "nudge" students one step forward from the point where they are and to provide appropriate help along the way according to individual's learning styles.Teaching techniques and classroom activities are recommended in the paper to serve as an instrument for a glimpse to what teachers are potentially able to help more learning happen.

Abstract:Identifying what kind of interaction between student and faculty can produce high quality experience for undergraduates may be a benefit to effective teaching in higher education. In this study, repertory grid technique was innovatively adopted to identify key factors in student-faculty interaction in terms of students' experiences at a Chinese Business College. With the help of this technique, we were able to listen to students directly and to identify their hidden needs in interaction with faculty. Through the mining of tacit knowledge, new measures for evaluating student experience in student-faculty interaction were also found. Furthermore, based on personal construct psychology and social psychology, the existence and composition of accessibility cues were studied and the reason why they can make faculty seem to be accessible was discussed. We concluded the keywords of accessibility cues as empathizing, encouraging, and enlightening, and such cues are like "rewards" that arouse students' affinity and motivation.

Abstract:Reviewing a composition to correct any weakness is an important part of the writing process. Students differ on different revision strategies at different linguistic level. Some students tend to revise vocabulary while others try to review sentence or discourse structure. Currently, plenty of colleges arrange compositions under the Automated Essay Scoring system (AES) , in which students can revise their compositions according to suggestions from the system. Theoretically, based on revision strategies, this thesis researches which kind of linguistic revision strategies non-English majors are most likely to use when writing on Automated Essay Scoring and why. A quantitative-plus-qualitative research is carried out to examine the questions. 52 students' compositions written on jukuu automated scoring system will be researched for text analysis. What's more, an interview of five students will be taken for further analysis. The survey shows that less-satisfied students can only make some surface revision, such as spelling, punctuation, grammar and so on, rather than on high-level revision like structure. Although the Automated Essay Scoring is helpful and efficient, teachers in college should lead students to revise on level of structure, and attention to detail with high-level students.
