A Ru-free anode was developed for the direct utilization of iso-octane in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The anode was consisted of Ni frameworks and nano-sized oxygen-ion conductor, samaria-doped ceria (SDC), which was introduced via an ion impregnation process. Compared with the cells with conventional Ni-cermet anodes, the cells with SDC-coated Ni anodes showed improved stability and enhanced electrochemical activity. Peak power density of ~ 400 mW cm-2 was achieved at 600 oC, and power generation was relatively stable over 260 hours when iso-octane-air mixtures were directly used as the fuel. The fuel composition had great effect on cell stability, indicating the fuel cell performance could be further improved by adjusting iso-octane content in the mixtures.
