The purpose of this study is (1) to examine whether the “hurt self versus hurt other” hypothesis, differentiates shame and guilt or not, and (2) to compare and contrast the cultural similarities and differences of these two emotions among college students in China and the United States. Stories were presented in four types of scenarios as “self hurts other”, “self hurts self”, “self-related-other hurts other” and “other hurts self” in this study. The findings indicated that: (1) Participants from two countries did not differ in the overall emotional responses on the shame and guilt scenarios; (2) The hypothesis that “hurt self versus hurt other” differentiate shame and guilt was supported in Chinese sample but not completely supported in US sample; and (3) Chinese participants have a stronger tendency to experience transferred guilt than that of American participants in “self-related-other hurt other” scenarios.
