An effective route to fabricate carbon onions using carbon black collected from the gas carburizing furnace as raw material and vacuum heat treatment technology is presented. The morphology and structural feature of carbon black and its products were investigated by means of XRD、HRTEM and Raman spectroscopy. It was found that, the raw material had particular stuctures, they were polyhedral carbon and nano-carbon spheres consisting of three different contrast layers; the products were carbon onions, meanwhile, most of the carbon onions’ inner encapsulated Fe particles. This simple approach provides a practical method to prepare carbon onions at relatively low temperature.
