Urban expansion, as a dynamic process of land use change, may be linked with topography, transportation, land use, social structure and economic type, but it is generally related to demography and economy in a city. According to a physical diffusion process, population density is regarded as an internal driving factor for urban expansion. We will discuss methods to calculate population density based on statistical data and examine characteristics of urban expansion modeling based on population through two examples. On a regional scale, an approximate rank-size-rule may be applied to allocate the aggregated population data because of quite a lot of disconnected built-up areas in this region. At local scale, a negative exponential function may be used to distribute the total number of people of a city over its built-up areas, most of which are nearly connected with each other.
Keywords:urban expansion, population distribution
