To assess the life cycle health impact of the building objectively, this paper presents a building health impact assessment (HIA) model. Based on the life cycle assessment (LCA) theory, the model classifies the health impact of the building into three categories: global warming, respiratory effect and carcinogenesis. In each category, the link between an emission and the consequent potential damage is established by four procedures: fate analysis, exposure analysis, effect analysis and damage analysis. Furthermore, a set of databases needed in each procedures is developed. The paper is offering a general overview of how to identify and assess the health impacts of the building quantitatively. This model can be used as a tool for project manager to make environment-friendly decisions in construction plans.
