In the present paper, for stay cables installed with designed magneto-rheological fluid (MR) dampers of the Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Highway Bridge, a series of in-situ tests are conducted to investigate control efficacy of the cable free vibrations achieved by the semi-active MR dampers, Passive-off MR dampers and Passive-on MR dampers. Based on experiences and lessons from the systemically theoretical and experimental investigations of the Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Highway Bridge in China, one integrated smart damping control and sensing system for the stay cables vibration in cable-stayed bridges site based on microprocessor with the DSP chip is proposed and is carrying out on the Ningbo Zhaobaoshan Bridge in China.
Keywords:Stay cable; vibration control; smart damping; semi-active control; tension force sensing
