In this paper, a photo-responsive molecularly imprinted organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel material was prepared by covalent imprinting of the template (ibuprofen) - functional monomer (4-hydroxyl-4′-[(Triisopropoxysilyl)propyloxy] azobenzene) for the specific binding of ibuprofen. After imprinting, ibuprofen was removed via hydrolysis in acid. The new molecularly imprinted organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel material was found to behavior similarly to the organic polymer based photo-responsive molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). The favorable binding strength of the imprinted receptor sites in the MIP for ibuprofen was found to be 2.28 x 103 M-1. Density of receptor sites in the MIP material was 4.0 ?mol/g-MIP. The release and uptake of ibuprofen from THF solution by the material could be reversibly photo-regulated upon alternate irradiation at 365 and 440 nm, respectively.
