For its impressive antibiotic activity, Eaton's reagent has been extensively used to catalyze the synthesis of 4-quinolone derivatives, but the mechanism behind the reaction is still not clear till now. In this paper, a possible mechanism for this reaction is revealed by using the density functional theory (DFT) method, which is consistent with the experimental phenomenon, and the existing main and side reactions are also explained successfully.
