Removal of fluoride and chloride from zinc oxide dust from ausmelt furnace were investigated using alkaline washing. The results show that F removal efficiency increase with an increase of alkaline concentration, alkaline washing temperature and time, but Cl removal efficiency as opposed to F removal efficiency. The L/S ratio has little effect on F and Cl removal efficiency. A new flowsheet for removal of fluoride and chloride from the secondary zinc resource was successfully proposed according to the results. F and Cl removal efficiency are more than 53.68% and 63.18% respectively using the flowsheet under optimum parameters of temperature 60 - 70 ℃, L/S ratio 3:1 and alkaline washing time 1.5h.
