A recent experiment [E. Ideguchi, et al., Phys. Lett. B 686 (2010) 18] found a superdeformed rotational band in 40Ar, which is analyzed by using the projected shell model. Calculations with axial symmetry deformation are performed up to spin I = 18 state. Our calculation indicates a perfect collective rotational behavior of the 40Ar superdeformed band till the band termination spin. A multiparticle-multihole configuration is found to interpret the observed superdeformed band. The calculated transitional quadrupole moments Qt and B(E2) values can reproduce the existing experiment data reasonable well, and therefore, can provide a prediction for the high spin region where no data for Qt and B(E2) exist. We suggest that effect of triaxial superdeformation is very small in this spin range.
