The theoretical and experimental study of an optical coupling system for coupling a fundamental-mode laser into a single-mode fiber is presented. Two different methods are introduced to design the system. First, the software of Tracepro based on geometric optics is used to design the proper optical coupling system. Second, the method of q parameter and ABCD law is employed to provide the optimal parameters of the optical coupling system. A simple optical coupling system is employed to couple the He-Ne 632.8 nm laser into a 9/125 μm single-mode fiber. A high coupling efficiency of 90% is obtained. Comparing these theoretical results with the experimental results, it is known that the method of q parameter and ABCD law with lens thickness considered is more appropriate to designing the coupling system because the theoretical coupling efficiency is very close to the experimental value. The further calculation indicates that the optical coupling system used in the experiment is suitable for most of fundamental-mode lasers with different wavelengths, waist sizes and M2 factors.
