Naphthopyran and its derivatives were synthesized and used as ultraviolet absorbent in photo-oxidation of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The absorption spectra of naphthopyran before and after irradiation of UV light illustrated that the absorbance of naphthopyran covered a wide range of wavelengths, especially in UV light range. The studies of infrared spectra, differential scanning calorimetric and thermogravimetric analysis proved that the addition of naphthopyran greatly reduced the photo-oxidation speed of PEO.
