An interesting phenomenon that the Q-switched mode-locking (QML) occurs in a acousto-optic Nd:YVO4 laser without any mode-locking components was observed in our experiment. The modulation depth nearly reaches to 90%. We think this phenomenon should not be attributed to the Kerr effect of the gain medium. Finally it is explained by introduction of gain-related effects.
