In this paper, electromagnetic scattering by an infinite conducting cylinder coated with left-handed material (LHM) for an incident wave of a line source is derived rigorously by using a boundary value mode-matching approach. The numerical calculations demonstrate the improved directivity of the electromagnetic scattering by such a cylindrical structure, due to the negative refraction phenomenon of the LHM. The far-field radiation pattern and its frequency dependence exhibit the possible application of the LHM in directive antenna technique.
