This paper presents an overview of the most widely used communications network-Global System of Mobile Communications (GSM) and investigates the current situation of the security feature. In the paper, we analyze the security structure and mechanisms in three aspects, then several attacks against the protocol including Denial of Service (DOS) attack and Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attack are described. Last part of the paper focuses on countermeasures. Pre-authentication procedure and mutual authentication are considered to be effective ways to mitigate these threats.
