Several water-soluble palladacycles were prepared as air-stable solid from the imine ligands bearing sulfonic group on N-phenyl group. The palladacycles with a six-membered ring gave high catalytic efficiency for the Suzuki coupling of aryl bromides and an activated aryl chlorides in aqueous solvent under mild conditions. The palladacycle 1 can be used for five reaction cycles in high conversions for the Suzuki coupling of 4-bromoanisole at reflux temperature in neat water. TEM analysis suggests a catalytic mechanism of recyclable palladium nanoparticles for the Suzuki coupling. The surfactant-protected palladium nanoparticles gave lower yields of the coupling product than those generated from palladacycle in situ due to the capping of free sites of metallic species.
