The aim of this paper is to explain the main challenges facing secondary education in the third world countries. Tanzania has been taken as a case study to represent other countries with similar situation. In fact other examples from other countries have been used to enrich the understanding of the challenges. The paper is organized into five parts. The first part is giving out a brief historical background of the country and its population. Second part gives the descriptions of the formal education system in Tanzania. Third part explains in details the main challenges facing secondary education. The fourth part is suggestions on how to combat the challenges and the fifth part is concluding remarks.
