A new method for the direct detection of trace copper in the presence of ionic surfactant was developed, based on the response of differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry at a gold electrode modified with self-assembled monolayer of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole(MBI).Experimental results indicated that MBI monolayer could prevent electrode surface fouling by ionic surfactant and that after preconcentration, copper down to 0.01 mmol l-1 in the presence of 0.5 mg ml-1 hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide could be detected. The features of the new method were to be simple, sensitive and low-cost.
Keywords:direct detection, trace copper, ionic surfactant, modified electrode, stripping voltammetry.
