SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is an application-layer control (signaling) protocol for creating, modifying, and terminating sessions with one or more participants. SIP-based applications are emerging everyday, including IP phone calls, multimedia conferences, etc. Instant messaging tools based on SIP are also developed, providing PC and mobile users excellent experience of a combination of text, audio, and video data. Behind RFC 3261, a number of extension protocols are developed to further enhance the usability of SIP. This paper examines a SIP extension -- the PUBLISH method (defined in RFC 3903) that used for event state publication, and gives an use case as a way of IM client state notification. |
