It is shown that the asymptotic equilibrium solutions (AES) of a nonlinear equation of motion possess conditional stability. The conditions for controlling instability are derived from a direct perturbation method. Theoretical analysis reveals that the controlling conditions contain Melnikov criterion for the onset of chaos and lead to sensitive dependence of the system on initial conditions and physical parameters. This implies that there exists metastable chaos in the system. Some examples, such as the Duffing oscillator, the rf-driven Josephson junction and other systems, are used to demonstrate the conclusion.
