Hemispherical electron plasma waves generated from ultraintenselaser interacting with a solid target having asubcritical preplasma is studied using particle-in-cell simulation. As the laser pulse propagates inside the preplasma, it becomesself-focused due to the response of the plasma electrons to theponderomotive force. The electrons are mainly heatedvia betatron resonance absorption, and their thermal energy canbecome higher than the ponderomotive energy. The hot electronseasily penetrate through the thin solid target and appear behind itas periodic hemispherical shell-like layers separated by the laserwavelength.
Keywords:physics of plasma; self-focusing; betatron resonance absorption; hemispherical wave
