In this paper, Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO) nanoparticles (NPs) were formed on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode by thermal annealing AZO thin film prepared using sputtering method. Polymer solar cells using ITO, ITO/AZO thin film, and ITO/AZO NPs as anodes were prepared, and it was shown that the short-circuit current and power conversion efficiency of the solar cells could be significantly improved by depositing AZO NPs on ITO electrodes. The mechanism for improving the performance of the bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells by using ITO/AZO NPs anode was systematically investigated. Our study opens up avenues for enhancing efficiency of polymer solar cells by structuring the electrodes with AZO NPs.
