A phase-field method is proposed to solve the electrostatic field of materials with arbitrary dielectric inhomogeneities under applied electric field. This method is based on Eshelby's approach, in which the inhomogeneities are characterized by a prescribed effective polarization field, and on the phase-field theory for attaining the effective polarization. Through the variational principle, the method shows that the electrostatic field of the heterogeneous dielectrics can be evaluated by establishing an equivalent system having a homogeneous dielectric phase and a prescribed polarization field determined by a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation. Possible applications of this method in heterogeneous dielectrics are discussed.
