An algorithm is proposed for fast reconstruction of off-axis digital holograms based on the combination of complex encoding (CE) and digital spatial multiplexing (SM). In this algorithm, every two of eight off-axis holograms recorded in sequence are assembled into one complex hologram, then the four complex holograms are synthesized into one SM hologram through multiplying each complex hologram by a tilted plane wave and then adding them up, thus we get a so-called complex spatial multiplexing hologram (CSMH) containing all the information of eight recorded holograms. Through this method, eight 2D Fourier transforms (FTs) can be simplified to one 2D FT in the process of digital holographic reconstruction, which can largely improve the computational efficiency with the resolution of the reconstructed images nearly unchanged.
