In this paper the first excursion problem of linear structures subjected to stochastic wind loads is considered. In the space of random variables introduced to model the stochastic excitation, the failure domain of the problem can be expressed as a union of quadratic elementary failure domains. In this paper, the procedures using gradient projection method are proposed for obtaining the design point of the quadratic elementary failure domain, which can provide some insights into enhancing the efficiency of the previously developed simulation method for the concerned first excursion problem. An illustrative example involving an along-wind excited steel building shows the performance of the proposed procedures.
