CaO was utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst for ozonation of nitrotoluenes wastewater. Results showed that CaO could promote ozone to generate more hydroxyl radicals (oOHs) that non-selectively degrade p-nitrotoluene (PNT) at an over double oxidation rate of alone ozone in simulated wastewater. A possible degradation pathway of PNT was proposed by gas chromatography/mass spectr ometry (GC/MS) analysis. CaO maintained a good pH and catalytic activity after several repeated use in CaO/O3. The removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (CODcr), content of nitrotoluenes, chromaticity and odour reached 97.97 %, 99.96%, 100% and 100% in wastewater at the same time, respectively.
