In this paper, we investigate the vertical sectorization in a downlink cellular network and optimize the identify threshold of vertical sectorization and antenna downtilt of each vertical sector. Firstly, we use gamma distribution to approximate the achievable sum-rates of the cellular networks with vertical sectorization. Then, according to the approximation, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize system throughput and achieve the optimization solution through a simple algorithm. The simulation results show that the system sum-rates can be improved by optimizing the number of vertical sectors, the threshold of vertical sectorization, and the antenna downtilt.
