A new rhodamine hydrazide derivative L containing a long chain schiff base with salicylic acid was synthesized and characterized. Addition of Cu2+ induced a significant solution color change (colorless to pink) and an enhancement in fluorescence of the probe, even in the presence of other commonly coexistent cations in CH3CN/HEPES buffer solvent (1:1, v/v, pH 7.0). Cu2+-promoted ring-opening and hydrolysis of rhodamine L in aqueous acetonitrile media led to the fluorescence turn-on changes with high selectivity and high sensitivity (detection limit ≤ 22.9 nM) and a rapid response time (≤ 1 min). Importantly, the probe was successfully used for fluorescence imaging in colon cancer SW480 cells
