A series of new smectic side-chain chiral liquid crystalline polymers were prepared having nematic monomer and non-mesogenic chiral monomer. All polymers were synthesized by graft polymerization using polymethylhydrosiloxane as backbone. The mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction measurements(XRD). The chemical structures of the monomers and polymers obtained were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra(1H NMR). M1 showed nematic phase during the heating and the cooling cycle. Polymer P1-P4 were chiral smectic A phase, while P5、P6 were chiral smectic C(SC*) phase. P7 showed bad LC properties and the mesomorphic properties of P8 had been disappeared. Experimental results demonstrated that the glass transition temperatures、the isotropization temperatures decreased with increasing the content of the chiral unit. The chiral agent offered helicity and at the same time provided diluting action.
