A series of tetradecyl methylacrylate-maleic anhydride random copolymer (TMA-co-MAH) were prepared and characterized as new type of interfacial modifiers. The influence of some factors on the copolymerization was studied. When the glass mat coated with coupling agent was treated using TMA-co-MAH solutions and compounded with PP, both MAH content and concentration of TMA-co-MAH solutions affected the mechanical properties of glass mat reinforced polypropylene composites (GMT-PPs). The introduction of TMA-co-MAH solution resulted in significant improvement of mechanical properties of the composites. It was shown that the optimal mononer ratio and concentration of copolymer solution were MAH:TMA=7:3 and 0.3%, respectively. The impact strength, the flexural strength and modulus of GMT-PPs treated with the new type of interfacial modifiers were all higher than GMT-PPs treated with maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) solutions as they were used at same level.
