In a large-magnetic-gradient magneto-optical trap (MOT) a few cesium atoms are cooled and trapped. A diffraction-limited lens assembly and a single-photon counting module (SPCM) are adopted to collect the fluorescence photons which are scattered from trapped atoms. The equal-distance step signals due to individual atoms entering into and escaping from MOT are clearly observed. The possible ways to improve fluorescence photon-counting rate of single atom trapped in MOT are also discussed.
Keywords:single atoms, cold atoms, magneto-optical trap, large magnetic-gradient, loading rate
