A series of novel amphiphilic ABC type coil-rod-coil triblock copolymers poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly{[(4-methoxyphenyl) oxycarbonyl] styrene}-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PMPCS-b-PS) using PMPCS which represented a novel-type mesogen-jacketed liquid crystal polymer (MJLCP) as rigid-rod block in the middle have been successfully synthesized by two-step atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In the copolymer PEO and PS were the coil block A and C component respectively, and the chain length of each segment in the block copolymer was controlled following our inclinations. The chemical structures of these copolymers were confirmed by 1H NMR spectrum and Gel Permeation Chromatograph. The liquid-crystalline behaviors of the block copolymers were studied by POM. Those triblock copolymer could form liquid crystalline phase which was quite stable with a high clearing point liquid-crystalline phases when the block copolymers with long rigid segment PMPCS.
