Natural lacquer is a complex mixture and the film-making processes are rather complicated. Many mechanisms of it existed but contradicted each other, mainly for lack of a suitable research method. A simple method using pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) has been used for characterization of organic coatings. The thermal-sensitive points of lacquer polymers were analyzed and the film-making mechanism was investigated in order to put an insight into it. Based on Py-GC/MS combined with enzyme-catalyzed products analysis, two-step reaction mechanism, i.e., urushiol or laccol firstly catalyzed by enzymes forming C-C and C-O coupling small oligmers in the first stage, and then radicals mainly proceeding auto-oxidization in the air, was proposed.
Keywords:raw lacquer; urushiol; laccases; film-making mechanism; pyrolysis
