Turbulent wakes past a circular cylinder are investigated by using both the numerical model and the digital Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. The fractional step finite element scheme is extended to simulate the turbulent wakes, it has good accuracy and stability properties, and is suitable for convection dominated flows in the wake region. The emphasize is put on simulating the unsteady vortex shedding processes and the saddle position, which are important for understanding the mechanism of the turbulent wakes. The time mean velocity properties are obtained, which show the recirculation region and the similarity characteristics are exist in the near region of the turbulent wakes. The numerical results are compared with the PIV measurements. |
