The ultrafine-grained WC-Co cermet bulk was prepared by a new method that contains pretreatment of the milled powder mixture and subsequent consolidation by spark plasma sintering (SPS). As compared with the direct SPS consolidation of WC and Co powders after ball milling, the pretreatment of the powder mixture improves significantly the homogeneity of the composite microstructure, particularly the homogeneous distribution of Co in the WC grain structure. Furthermore, the pretreatment increases the density of the consolidated WC-Co bulk, as well as the mechanical properties. The present work provides an effective technique of rapid preparation of ultrafine WC-Co cermets from the coarse raw powder materials.
