In this study, Zn containing tricalcium phosphate/fluoridated hydroxyapatite (ZnTCP/FHA) biphasic coatings were synthesized by sol-gel method on Ti6Al4V substrates. The effects of the nanosized ZnTCP powder on the coating were characterized by SEM, EDX and AFM. ZnTCP powders were embedded in the FHA matrix providing a heterogeneous coating surface. In vitro tests demonstrated that ZnTCP/FHA biphasic coatings had a sustained zinc release behavior, which was time- and load dependent, and good inducing apatite deposition ability on their surfaces in simulated body fluid (SBF). The biphasic coating is expected to enhance early stage bone formation because of the superior bioactivity and the stimulation effects of zinc ions.
