Nanosecond ultraviolet photovoltaic effects are observed in MgO single crystals at ambient temperature without any bias. The rise time is about 10 ns and the full width at half maximum is about 20 ns when the surfaces of MgO single crystals are irradiated by 248 nm KrF laser pulses. The experimental results show that MgO single crystals may be potential in ultraviolet photodetectors.
