An ad hoc network is composed of a group of mobile and wireless nodes whose power provided by batteries. Energy saving is a crucial problem in ad hoc networks. Various energy saving schemes are required to lengthen the network’s lifetime. A novel energy-saving scheme for ad hoc networks is proposed in this paper, which limited the broadcasting range of the route discovery information through forwarding decision based on distance. Extensive simulation has been done to compare the performances between the proposed scheme and the traditional AODV protocol. The simulation results show that the novel scheme could save more energy.
